Mellow Land – Cracow and Low Beskid

Low Beskid – a mountain range in the Carpathians, located just 2 hours East from Krakow, between the Lupkowska Pass in the East and the Tylicka Pass in the West. The eastern border of the Low Beskid is also the border of the Eastern and Western Carpathians.

Region inhabited by one from the four ethic minorities in Poland. The perfect place to rest, away from civilization. The place where tie flows slower, where the words nostalgia and memory have a special meaning. A land of gentleness, far from the beaten track. You will not find high peaks here, but you can admire the picturesque valleys, where we will traverse the flowered meadows. In small villages, local residents will tell about the complicated fate of Lemkos, open the doors of wooden UNESCO churches, where we will admire richly decorated icons in the candlelight. Low Beskid is a perfect place for savoring a moment while hiking, contact with wild nature and tasting cheese straight from the hut. It is a nostalgic place of remembrance of the Battle of Gorlice from 1915 called little Verdun. A memento of this tragic history are many cemeteries scattered throughout the Gorlice district.

  • See the wooden, colorful UNESCO churches

DAY 1  KRAKOW – AN UNUSUAL CITY

Arrival to Krakow. Krakow is a unique city with over thousand years of history, the necropolis of Polish kings and the cultural, educational, scientific and economic center of the region. It is a place that every year ranks high among the most beautiful and most frequently visited European cities by tourists. No wonder! The rich history is visible here almost everywhere and the artistic spirit almost hovers over the streets of the Old Town. After check in at the hotel  (standard time 3pm), free time to wander through the Old Town. See the largest Market Square in Europe with numerous tenement houses and St. Mary's Church, you can  visit the courtyard of the Jagiellonian University, the oldest university in Poland. Free time in the Sukiennice Cloth Hall, where you can buy traditional handcrafts. Overnight and dinner in the hotel.

DAY 2 THE CITY OF KINGDOM

After breakfast, set off to explore the city. Krakow has thousands of monuments, stories and legends that can be felt in every corner of the Old Royal Town. Start your journey at the Barbican. Walk along the Royal Route towards Wawel Castle. See the Wawel Cathedral, enter the castle courtyard and visit the famous dragon. Lunch in a traditional regional restaurant . In the afternoon, free time to visit one of the numerous museums in Krakow. Dinner and overnight in Krakow.

DAY 3 LITTLE KRAKOW AND THE TRAIL OF WOODEN ARCHITECTURE

We leave early in the morning in the direction of the Beskid Niski. We will start our adventure in Biecz on the Ropa River, sometimes referred to as Little Cracow. Biecz has to this day retained its medieval street layout and quite a few buildings from the period of its greatest splendour in the 14th and 15th centuries, when it boasted the title of a royal castle. After a pleasant stroll through Biecz's charming old town, we will head to a tiny village nearby to explore the first building on the Wooden Architecture Trail, a late Gothic church on the prestigious UNESCO list.

Dined with a delicious lunch in a regional restaurant, we will listen attentively to stories about the Great War and visit historical cemeteries from that period. On the way to Wysowa we will visit an unusual Orthodox church, thus entering the trail of Lemko Orthodox churches for which the region is famous.

In the evening we will have dinner in an atmospheric manor house in the centre of a beautiful historic garden... and then a night of storytelling as part of our integration, for as long as our strength lasts.

DAY 4 IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF NON-EXISTENT LEMKO VILLAGES

After a delicious and healthy breakfast, we will start exploring the Lemko region along the traces of non-existing Lemko villages. In many places, all that is left of the villages are destroyed Orthodox churches and cemeteries, or wooden doors symbolising the desolation of the Low Beskids area and the mass displacement of Lemkos. With our guide, we will go on a mini trek to one such abandoned village, located on the border of the Magura National Park.

Beskid Niski is also the land of Hutsul horses, which, with a bit of luck, can be seen running freely in the pastures. We will visit the stud farm of these beautiful horses, which is the largest in Europe. We will have lunch in a regional tavern on the stud farm, and then we will set off on a hike through the forest, this time to one of the most beautifully located World War I cemeteries at the top of the mountain.

A clear picture of the material culture of the Lemko region are the Orthodox churches. Many of them were destroyed, those that survived the turbulent times of wars and subsequent displacements delight with their architecture and decoration. Towering above the wooden structure, their onion-shaped domes and beautifully decorated iconostasis remain a hallmark of this part of the Carpathian Mountains. At the end of the day, we will visit one of the best-preserved, atmospheric 17th century St. Paraskeva Orthodox Church in Kwiatoń (UNESCO).

In the evening, we'll sit around a campfire, weaving stories about the region's complex history. Or maybe we'll sing together?

DAY 5 IN HARMONY WITH NATURE

Feeling the previous day's hikes in our legs, today is set aside for relaxation and recuperation. After a leisurely breakfast, we will head to a friendly agrotourism to participate in an ecological workshop. Along the way, we will discover yet another UNESCO-listed Orthodox church.

The Beskid Niski is an ideal place to deepen your knowledge on how to use the gifts of nature around you to live healthily, in harmony with nature. We will learn what therapeutic herbal cuisine is all about, how to bake delicious breads and flatbreads. What real "slow food in Polish" means. For lunch, dishes made from seasonal, local produce.

In the afternoon, we continue our environmental education. Sage, nettle, thyme, calendula...We will master the art of making natural glycerine soaps and fragrance bars from dried herbs and flowers. We will end the workshop with a "forest bath" with elements of tree therapy and relaxation. Sounds good, doesn't it? A moment of forgetfulness, a time of relaxation away from civilisation surrounded by wild and beneficial nature. In the evening, dinner in a regional tavern with authentic Lemko cuisine.

DAY 6 GLASS CITY AND IDYLLIC MANSION

Today we leave the wild backwoods of the Beskid Niski. Unhurriedly, we will move from the green land of gentleness to an idyllic manor near Krosno. However, there are many attractions waiting for us on the way! The first stop on our route will be the surroundings of Dukla, which are inextricably linked with stories of the fierce battles for the Dukla Pass in 1944. We will head to the hill from where there is a magnificent panorama of Dukla and the Valley of Death. However, Dukla is not only about war stories. We will also visit the Palace here, a late Baroque French-style magnate's residence. The former 'palazzo in fortezza' now houses a historical museum, and is itself surrounded by a park with ponds and the ruins of a former brewery.

In the early afternoon we will reach the capital of Polish glass - Krosno. Here we will visit one of the 7 New Wonders of Poland according to National Geographic, i.e. the modern and interactive Glass Heritage Centre, presenting the glass heritage of the city and offering amazing glass-making demonstrations. Time to shop designer, handmade and painted glass products. Lunch at a nearby restaurant.

On the way to our accommodation, we will stop at one of the most beautiful family-owned vineyards in the Podkarpackie region, located on a hilltop with fabulous views. Wine tasting and a moment to relax.

W will enjoy a delicious dinner in the beautiful manor house interiors. This is another opportunity to travel back in time and feel like you are in a bygone era.

DAY 7 – RELAXATION AND THE CASTLE

We will spend the morning in our idyllic manor house, where there is something for everyone. Those wishing to relax are welcome to take advantage of the extensive spa offer. For the active, there is the possibility of a bike ride, cooking, chocolate or oenological workshops.

After a light lunch, we leave our enclave of peace and quiet and head for Kamieniec Castle. Strolling through the castle ruins, we will once again go back in time.

We are slowly coming to the end of our adventure, in a region where wild nature still reigns, and the words memory and nostalgia take on a special meaning. Time to come back to Krakow.

In the evening, dinner at a Jewish restaurant in Kazimierz district.
