ON THE TRAIL OF FORMER ARISTOCRATIC FAMILIES

The region can boast of a rich cultural heritage, works of the Renaissance, souvenirs of the former aristocratic families of Zamoyski, Czartoryski or Radziwiłł. It is here that the most beautiful residences of the former Republic of Poland can be found; romantic palaces and manor houses, now largely restored, invite visitors into their interiors. Beautiful cities and towns, among which the artistic Kazimierz on the Vistula River, Renaissance Zamość and multicultural Lublin are leading the way, encourage unhurried exploration. But the Lublin region also offers wonderful nature and idyllic spots. Loess ravines, the dense forests of the Roztoczański National Park, the slow-flowing Wieprz River, thatched-roofed wooden houses, windmills and Polish ponies, which live here almost in the wild. Day 3 – Kazimierz Dolny – a city of artists beautifully situated on the Vistula River

In the morning, we set off from Warsaw towards the Lublin region and Kazimierz on the Vistula, a picturesque artists’ colony, a favourite open-air location for painters, photographers and filmmakers. It owes its fame to the exquisite harmony of its landscape, combining the nature of the Małopolski Gorge of the Vistula with magnificent architecture. A medieval castle and a stone tower rise above the town. The town centre impresses with its Renaissance town houses from the period of the town’s development as an important trading town on the Vistula trade route. Numerous art galleries and handicraft shops add to the town’s charm.

We will start our stay in this remarkable place with lunch at a local restaurant. Afterwards, we will enjoy a guided walk that will introduce us to the history of the multicultural city. We will visit the parish churches of St John the Baptist and St Bartholomew. Inside the church, in the music choir, there is a 17th century organ, considered to be the oldest surviving musical instrument of its kind in Poland. We will find out the purpose for which grand granaries were built in the city. Kazimierz has preserved quite a few Jewish monuments, including a synagogue. During the walk, we will have a taste of the famous cockles from Kazimierz.

After a guided walk, some free time to relax and check in at the hotel. Then we will head to a charming vineyard located near Kazimierz, which looks particularly picturesque in the afternoon. A short tour of the vineyard, tasting and a toast to the success of our trip!

Dinner in the hotel restaurant. We encourage you to take an individual walk in the evening. The illuminated Kazimierz in the evening looks exceptionally romantic!

Overnight in Kazimierz.

Day 4 – Multicultural Lublin – an architectural pearl of eastern Poland

After breakfast, we continue to discover Kazimierz, this time from the perspective of the water during a pleasant cruise on the Vistula River.

We will then head to the region’s capital, Lublin, which we will get to know during a guided city tour. Lublin is one of the most attractive cities in Poland. A multicultural city, where Catholics, Jews, Orthodox and Greek Catholics lived side by side for centuries. Original in more than 70%, the architecture of the Old Town attracts visitors from all over the world. Lublin’s Old Town impresses with its well-preserved, mainly Renaissance buildings containing traces of Gothic, Baroque and Classicism. The city’s multicultural, over 700-year history is confirmed by numerous monuments. Among the most valuable is the Chapel of the Holy Trinity, whose walls are covered with 15th-century Ruthenian-Byzantine paintings. During the tour, a workshop on local baking, originating from the Jewish tradition – onion bread – awaits us. This extremely tasty, nutritious delicacy has become a culinary highlight of the city. Lunch at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon we will go on a tour of the historic Pearl Brewery. We will visit the basements where we will learn the secrets of making local beer. Finally, a tasting at one of the longest bars in Poland.

Lublin is a city of young and creative people. A city of numerous universities. The festivals held here periodically emphasise the atmosphere of openness, respect for culture and the need to share a modern approach to tradition. In the evening, dinner in a local restaurant of the old town, where you can most feel this unique atmosphere.

Overnight in Lublin.

Day 5Expedition to Roztocze

After breakfast, we will go to the Lublin Village Museum, a wonderful open-air museum where we will learn about architecture from different lands of the Lublin region. We will see, among other things, a reconstruction of a pre-World War II Lublin town, with a town hall, police station, ice cream parlor and the home of a Jewish tzaddik. The Museum’s picturesque locations have also been the setting for many Polish films.

We will then set off towards the Roztocze – an extraordinary natural landscape. It is characterised by dense forests, a colourful mosaic of undulating fields, sparse buildings, silence and a climate and atmosphere unique in the country. A ride through the characteristic Roztocze forests with an interesting commentary by the guide. We reach Zwierzyniec, a small town which is a base for exploring the Roztocze. Probably already at the beginning of the 17th century, Zwierzyniec functioned as a summer residence of the Zamoyski family. The nucleus of the settlement was a hunting manor built over a pond. Near the manor, there was a large game preserve surrounded by a high fence, where deer, roe deer, elk and wild boar were kept.

We will start our exploration of Zwierzyniec with a visit to a small island with a historic baroque church. Then we will set off on a melex tour of the Roztocze National Park. On the way, we will stop at Echo Ponds, where we will admire the local scenery from a viewing tower. Numerous stops to admire the flora of the local forests. We will visit a breeding centre for Polish horses, for which Roztocze is famous. During the tour you will have a break for lunch and at the end visit an old forester’s lodge.

Dinner in a restaurant where they serve venison – an old delicacy of Polish, courtly tables.

Overnight in Zwierzyniec.

Day 6 – Canoe trip and Zamość – the ideal Renaissance city (UNESCO)

Canoe trips are one of the most interesting and beautiful tourist activities that can be practised in Poland. We have some of the best conditions for this type of tourism in Europe. After breakfast, a relaxing rafting trip down the extremely gentle Wieprz River awaits. Contact with nature, a chance to admire the Roztocze landscapes. After the activity, time for lunch. We will go to the traditional Guciów Homestead, where we will learn about the customs of the region and taste local products. Lunch based on regional cuisine, nettle soup, buckwheat stuffed cabbage rolls with linseed oil and for dessert, blueberry dumplings. Why not? In the afternoon, drive to Zamość.

Zamość, known as the ideal city, was founded in the 16th century by Crown Hetman Jan Zamoyski. Designed by the eminent Italian architect Bernardo Morando, the fortress city, as an architectural and urban ensemble, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992.

In the afternoon we will visit Zamość with a guide in period dress. We will be delighted by the magnificent Renaissance market square, built on a rectangular plan, with beautiful Armenian town houses and the town hall, which is decorated with a sweeping classical staircase. We will also discover the cathedral and the city walls with the very interesting Museum of Fortifications and Weapons.

Dinner in the hotel restaurant. We are in the east so there are numerous buckwheat dishes on the table.

Overnight in Zamość.

Day 7 – Kozłówka – romantic seat of the Zamoyski family

After a lazy breakfast, we bid farewell to Zamość and set off for the former seat of the aristocratic Zamoyski family – the Palace in Kozłówka, which now houses the Zamoyski Museum. This late Baroque magnate residence boasts original furnishings from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in the style of the Second Empire. It is now one of the best-preserved palace complexes in Europe. We will visit the interiors of the Palace, the decoration of which combines the traditions of European culture with Polish national traditions, weaving into them the history of the Zamoyski family. We will see the palace chapel, designed on the model of the royal chapel at Versailles, as well as the original Socialist Realist Art Gallery, presenting works by Polish artists from the 1950s and at the same time warning against the threat posed by the totalitarian system.

The chateau is surrounded by a beautiful flower garden, rosarias and an atmospheric landscaped park with historic trees. A walk at the end of the tour will be the perfect relaxation.

After lunch at a local restaurant, it is time to return to Warsaw, where we will arrive in the late afternoon.
